Meet Vickie

Vickie is a passionate third-generation horse trainer dedicated to helping equestrian competitors and their horses thrive. With her whole-horse approach, she seamlessly blends nutrition, bodywork, and performance training, ensuring that horses excel both physically and emotionally.

What sets Coach Vickie apart is her belief that optimal gut health and co-regulating with your horse are the secret ingredients to peak performance. She knows that mental strength is crucial; when riders feel stressed or anxious, it resonates with their horses, blocking their ability to shine together.

Vickie empowers riders to stay calm under pressure, synchronize their energy with their horses, and enhance gut health for overall well-being. With 20 years of experience running a rehabilitation facility and retirement care, she firmly believes, just like us, that “healing comes from within”—and horses are no exception!

True performance, in her eyes, comes from a balanced approach that nurtures both horse and rider.

My Story

From Frustration to Transformation

I've spent over 30 years doing what I love -training hunter-jumpers and competing at top shows across California, Bend, Oregon, and Calgary, Canada. For the last 20 years, I've also founded and run a rehabilitation center for performance horses. My mission has always been simple: keep my clients' horses sound, happy, and ready for their next competition. I've poured everything into this work, watching horses and riders succeed together.

But success came with a blind spot I didn't see until everything fell apart.

The Day Everything Changed

My daughter's horse was perfect the day before we were supposed to compete. She jumped beautifully, and we were both excited and confident. Then the next morning, everything shifted. Her horse could barely walk on her left front leg. There was no apparent reason, no fall, no injury, nothing visible. Just lameness that came out of nowhere.

My daughter was heartbroken. Angry. Worried sick about her horse. And I was devastated watching her pain, because in all my years as a trainer, I couldn't explain why this kept happening, not just to us, but to so many riders and trainers I knew.

I'd witnessed horses jump clear rounds, only to suddenly stop mid-course, showing signs of pain. I'd listened to trainers brand these horses as "bad" or "mean" when something deeper was wrong. I'd seen chronic pain go unnoticed, masked by medication, labeled as behavioral issues.

I had to find answers.

The Search for Real Solutions

I started collaborating with skilled veterinarians and healers; acupuncturists, chiropractors, specialists in magnetic therapy and microcurrent treatments. We saw progress. But the results were temporary. The effectiveness would fade, as if the horses' bodies were blocking the benefits we sought. And the costs made it unsustainable for most owners.

Something was missing.

After years of research and investment, I finally discovered what I'd been looking for: a unique technique that teaches horses to connect with their bodies and release tension on their own. Not from external treatment. From within.

The results were astonishing. Deeper than anything I'd encountered before.

The Real Breakthrough

That's when I understood the gut connection. I realized that chronic pain often starts in the gut from tension, inflammation, digestive stress and radiates into muscles, organs, and behavior. When I optimized gut health in my own horses and my clients' horses, I witnessed profound physical and emotional transformations. Horses became calmer, more responsive, more present.

But here's what I discovered that changed everything: the horse's transformation only lasted when the rider transformed too.

I started noticing patterns I'd overlooked for years -a missing piece that explained everything. The moment a rider would lose focus in the saddle and shifted their attention to fear of judgment or self-doubt, they lost connection with their horse. Everything fell apart. Timing got sloppy. The quality of aids diminished. The fluidity vanished.

The horse felt it immediately.

I realized I'd been solving half the puzzle. I could optimize a horse's gut health and release their physical tension, but if the rider stayed stuck in anxiety, self-doubt, and fear, the pattern would reinstall itself.

So I began implementing at great depth the mental performance aspect to my coaching; teaching riders the skills that matter: resilience under pressure, staying calm when it counts, making confident decisions, recovering quickly after mistakes. The mental anchors that keep you present and connected, even when your nervous system wants to shut down.

What I Know Now

I've learned that performance breakthroughs aren't about fixing the horse. They're about building the complete foundation where both horse and rider can truly excel.

Optimized gut health eliminates the chronic pain that masquerades as behavioral issues. Co-regulating the nervous system between horse and rider through mental performance coaching develops the presence and resilience that keeps you and your horse connected when pressure rises. And trust-based harmonious horsemanship -as I call it -creates the unshakable bond where both partners believe in each other.

This is the system that works.

My daughter's horse healed. She went on to compete beautifully. But more importantly, my daughter learned that her own presence, confidence, and mental clarity were crucial keys to partnership. She became a better rider because she became a more present, confident human.

Why I'm Sharing This

I'm inspired to share these powerful techniques with other horse owners and trainers, because I know what it feels like to watch your horse suffer and not know why. I know the frustration of expensive therapies that don't last. I know the heartbreak of riders blaming themselves or their horses when the real answer was something no one had shown them.

This journey has been life-changing -not just for my horses and my clients, but for my own growth and understanding of what it really means to be a partner with another living being. Co-regulation is vital to a successful, long-lasting team.

If you're ready to discover similar transformations for yourself and your horse; to rein in the performance anxiety, emotional fear, and relationship challenges that have kept you stuck -I want to connect with you.

Because this isn't just about having a sound, healthy horse.

It's about unleashing your true equestrian edge.

When my horse came to Vickie’s Yard seven years ago, he was in a devastating/ life threatening state suffering from stomach congestion where no root cause could be found.Within a few months his condition improved so much that he could not only digest his food again! but also go back under saddle! Wow! And then a dream came true that I had never thought would be possible - we went to our first dressage show and he excelled with almost 74%. I was over the moon.

Fast forward to today - my horse that usually moves forward easily ceased to do so. He also got more spooky and unpredictable. Some joint injection improved the situation but not for a long time. Vickie suggested to work on releasing residual tension. This work taught him how he could choose relaxation over tension. And thus removing stress from joints and ligaments but also from his state of mind. It was a game changer.

While his health improved, I noticed that things did not always go smoothly when I was working with my horse. And I noticed that I was the one holding tension. I was fearful from past experiences. It became clear to me that my negative self talk influenced the communication with my horse.Vickie taught me to break this cycle by teaching me to listen to my horse and also to myself. She has a genuine feel for what is going on in the relationship and can thus effectively improve the communication between horse and rider/handler.

Before starting working with Vickie, my horse had a negative reputation due to his behavior. Vickie never blames the horse. She has enormous patience and listens to the horse to help overcome behavioral challenges.

She enabled me to learn what my horse is communicating to me which in return makes my horse feel more understood. It has brought the relationship to a whole different level. I have been with horses for over 45 years. I have always longed for a connection with horses and only now start to feel what real partnership means. Thank you Vickie! I am forever grateful.

Vickie is a gift to every horse and horse owner.I can trust Vickie 200%. She makes me feel comfortable.

I sent my Thoroughbred gelding, Chase, to live with Vickie Montgomery. I was only expecting to have a nice place for my horse to retire in the company of other retirees. He was not really old enough to retire, but I had been unable to train him to be a safe ride for me and so I decided to buy another horse. Vickie then worked with Chase.

The main problems I had with Chase were:

1) spooking and bolting(one incident ended with me in an ambulance and trip to the ER)

2) very aggressive towards other horses, and

3) rushing fences in certain situations.

Other issues included a very “busy” mouth, rarely carrying the bit quietly. His mouth was busy even when he didn’t have a bit, i.e., when being lunged with a halter or being ridden with a hackamore.

Chase was also a “hard keeper” and I had to feed him a lot to keep weight on him and he often did not finish his hay, just scattered it all over his stall.

If he felt any pressure, i.e., was being led or lunged or ridden, he would not tolerate the proximity of any horse and would invariably kick out. If a horse walked by his stall, he would almost always rush at the bars of the stall, teeth bared, ears pinned and threatening.

What I observed when making the trips to work with Vickie was that my horse (now) appeared to me what I would call very quiet in his mind. He walked differently on the lead (slower and more relaxed) and he could attain a very relaxed state working in-hand in the arena.

I was also amazed when I saw Vickie lead him through a paddock among a couple of very active, large youngsters who were “all over” Chase wanting his attention and pushing at him and all the while he just followed Vickie’s lead through the pasture without any sign of anxiety or hostility.

I knew my horse had changed at a very fundamental level. Vickie patiently worked with me so I could learn first how to access a relaxed state myself and then be able to share it with my horse. In this aspect, Chase was already far ahead of me. I have enthusiastically jumped in, knowing that improving myself was going to allow me to have a great relationship with my horse. I greatly enjoyed working with Vickie, as she is patient but also energetic and always looking to make the process fun.

I mentioned the results that Vickie achieved working with Chase at The Yard. I have to admit I had some trepidation about bringing Chase back to the boarding barn near my home. I wasn’t sure if I could maintain the great progress Vickie had made and keep improving my relationship with my horse. But I could see the difference in Chase, again at a fundamental level, right away.

The most telling thing was when he had been in his stall for a few minutes, someone walked a horse past his stall, right in front of him and he only raised his head, had a look, and then went back to eating his hay! That was astounding. As I write this, Chase has been home a week and has not had even the slightest aggressive attitude towards horses walking past his stall. He has made fast friends with the horses stabled on either side of him. Not the picking and fussing kind of attitude he had before with neighbors but now truly affectionate and playful. Many people at the barn have commented on how “chill” he is. Chase had quite the reputation previously and I think not everyone was excited about him coming back. But now that they see his new personality, he is very popular.

I was so hopeful to find something that would allow me to connect with this wonderful horse and that I wouldn’t have to give up on him after all. I felt that Vickie took the time to get to know me, and really delve into how I was feeling and perceiving the process not just with my horse but with myself also.

I myself don’t have a horse of my own, but I do teach and ride some of the horses out at the barn where I am at. But I do consider all of them mine when I am with them. Before I was a scared rider with very low self esteem (even though it didn’t show). I was constantly scared that I would “ruin” a horse with my riding or I was not worthy to ride the horses. It got so bad that when I took an evaluation, it said I had depression and anxiety. Before this program I was very hesitant that it would help, I wondered how would it help. Since I was practicing my riding 3-4 times a week and I still could not feel better about myself or my riding. The best thing in the program is that I have more confidence in myself and the things that I do, in both horses and in life. Something in me said “ just do it, it couldn’t hurt”. After the first few weeks my attitude and perspective have changed completely! I don’t have negative thoughts in my head and I find myself truly smiling and loving myself and my rides.

Vickie is the best she’s so warm/ easy to talk to and filled with knowledge! Would definitely recommend her and this program! Thank you Vickie so very much

Lindsay Green

I just completed the sprint course last week and have to say that it is a really well laid out course with loads of support provided by Vickie.  I have done quite a few online courses as there has not been any training opportunities anywhere remotely close to where I live that are not based on the old fashioned/very outdated way of being with horses and none of which had actual coaching calls included.  The exercises in the course are all explained clearly and do not take up to much time which helps build the habit of using them and having the coaching call with Vickie after 3-4 days of starting the exercises meant that if there had been any slight misunderstanding of the exercise or tips on how I could do it better I still had plenty time to practice before I was due to start the next module.I'm really quiet/shy and still not used to speaking on zoom but Vickie was so enthusiastic, warm and friendly that it really helped me open up more about how I was getting on, which in turn helped me even more.  She also always had really good training tips for me to try with Blue and also offered really good alternative perspectives for situations I was in with him and people in my life.  This in turn had me looking forward to our weekly catch ups rather than having any sense of dread or apprehension.  The course has really helped me become more present more of the time by helping me create habits that I can do throughout the day.  It has also made  me be aware of when I am actually being present which has helped a great deal with being more connected with Blue.  We still have the odd moment where the connection is not so good but there are a lot more really good moments and I can appreciate what he is trying to teach me in the not so good ones. From towards the end of the last week I gave also come to realize that being more present also makes it seem like time is going much slower which is great when I am spending time with Blue or doing other things I enjoy but maybe not quite so good when I am at work although I am trying to just keep viewing it that it will help me with the things I do love doing. I want to say a very big thank you to Vickie for creating this course, suggesting it to me and being an overall lovely and amazing person.

Thank YOU!
